How to Paint on Drywall That Has a Layer Flaking

    • 1). Scrape off all of the flaking drywall with a plastic scraper. Clean off the walls that are going to be painted with a shop vac. Attach a brush and turn on the shop vac. Go over the entire area, and suck up any dust and debris that may be in the way when the walls are being painted.

    • 2). Wrap a microfiber tack cloth around a pole sander to wipe down the ceiling and walls. Wipe the tack cloth over each wall, and shake it out occasionally to clean it off. Tape off the ceiling or anything else that will not be painted with painter's tape. Run the tape along the edges of the ceiling and floor.

    • 3). Dip a paint roller into a bucket of PVA drywall primer. Roll out the primer in four-by-four foot sections beginning in one corner of the room. Spread out the primer in a "M" or "W"" rolling pattern. Attach an extension pole to the roller to reach the higher locations. Applying the primer with this method will prevent the primer from having roller marks and will give it a smooth look.

    • 4). Move around the entire area of the room until all of the drywall has been covered with a layer of primer. Wipe down any swirl texture that the roller may have left behind with a paint brush. Wipe down the area with a microfiber tack cloth once the primer is dry to remove any dust and debris the drywall may have accumulated.

    • 5). Apply a coat of flat paint just like the primer was applied. Move from side to side with the roller, and cover all of the walls with the paint. Add the first coat and wait for it to dry. Apply a second coat in the same manner. Remove all of the tape that was attached to the walls at the floor and ceiling.
