A single apartment most commonly refers to a one-bedroom apartment. A basic single apartment has a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. There are single apartments with additional features such as a balcony, a fireplace, a yard, two-levels, storage space, etc., but these vary from apartment to apartment and are not standard. - Studio apartments feature one large room.Empty Room image by dwight9592 from Fotolia.com
A studio apartment refers to a large room with a kitchen and bathroom. These types of apartments are self contained units that have everything except the bathroom in the same space. It is typically a large room where some portion of it has a kitchen counter, sink, stove and refrigerator. Some studio apartments have additional features, such as walls or dividers to separate the living space from the kitchen, a balcony, a yard, storage space, etc. These vary from apartment to apartment and are not standard. - Single and studio apartments lack space for a dining room.interior decoration of living room image by Canakris from Fotolia.com
A single apartment has a living room, bedroom and kitchen as separate spaces, a studio apartment does not. A studio apartment only has one large room that is multi-purpose as a living room, bedroom and kitchen (some portion of the room that has a kitchen counter). The only thing they both have in common is that they both have bathrooms. Aside from that, a single apartment is different from a studio apartment in every way. A single apartment also tends to be larger and higher in rent than a studio. - You may not have to go the laundromat if you have a deluxe apartment with a washer and dryer.laundromat image by Scott Patterson from Fotolia.com
Single and studio apartments may have specific features that are called amenities in rental listings. Amenities may include a stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer, air conditioning, wall to wall carpet, furniture, special lighting, etc. These features are not standard, but may be included in deluxe apartments. Deluxe apartments are apartments that have more amenities than standard apartments. - Some leasing agencies don't allow pets.Puppies of the spitz-dog and cat in studio image by Ulf from Fotolia.com
On a rental listing, a single apartment is called "1 BR," and a studio apartment is called "studio." There are other terms that are helpful to know. For instance, there are some apartments that are known as "in-law units." These are usually studios or single apartments built as part of a house instead of in an apartment building. Other useful terms are lease terms. Most apartments require a one-year lease, but some are available on a per-month basis. These least terms are listed as "1 yr" or "month to month." Finally, pets may or may not be accepted in apartment buildings. These will be listed as "pet-friendly," "cat/dogs ok," or "no pets allowed."
