How to Make a Playground for Toddlers
- 1). Spread the wood chips over the area of land for the playground to reduce accident-related injuries. The layer of wood chips should be 12 inches deep and should extend at least 6 feet out past play equipment.
- 2). Fence-in the area to keep toddlers from venturing out of the designated playground area and into the street or a neighbor's yard. Ensure children cannot access or work the gate-door mechanism.
- 3). Assemble, position and inspect playground equipment to ensure guardrails, barriers or other protective pieces are properly in place. Make sure there aren't sharp edges, broken pieces, cracks or small spaces for children to get body parts stuck, pinched or squeezed between.
- 4). Leave enough space between pieces of equipment for children to safely play on or near while other children are using equipment. Equipment more than 30 inches high should be placed a minimum of 9 feet apart.
- 5). Place loose outdoor toys in an easily accessible plastic bin and leave in a spacious area of the playground, away from play structures.
