The Many Fames of Jerez
Jerez is only 15 kilometers away from Costa de la Luz which is famous for its enchanting beaches and wine production. This region is also renowned for its horses, historical heritage, flamencos and artistic culture as well as it annual motorcycle €Grand Prix€.
Wine History
Jerez is very famous for its wine production especially its sherry wine. It has a very old wine tradition which goes as far back as 3,000 years with its import to Rome over the past 2,000 years. Its sherry wine became popular in England since the 12th century with the Moorish city name €Sherish€. There are numerous bodegas or wine cellars in Jerez with a long tradition in wine production. Many of these are commercialized with guided tours for tourists to learn about the wine history and manufacturing process. Guests are allowed to taste some of the local wines produced.
Horse fame
Horses are another distinct trait of Jerez where famous horses are bred commercially. However, it was the Carthusian monks who started the breeding of horses which the military took over later. There is the annual Horse Fair held in Jerez every May where rare and noble breeds are on display. This is a very huge event in Andalusia where dressage demonstrations are conducted from the region's famous riding schools
