Foods That Are Lipids
- Simply put, lipids are fats. But don't clam up: fats are important to bodily functions since they help the body absorb nutrients like Vitamins A, D, E and K. But that doesn't mean that lipids should be consumed in excess. Quite the contrary, in moderation lipids will help you have healthy hair, healthy skin and a healthy body.
- There are several types of lipids -- some better for you and some worse. The types include saturated fats, unsaturated fats and trans fats. Unsaturated fats are considered good fats because they can actually lower cholesterol levels, although they are still high in calories. Saturated fats and trans fats, however, can lead to cardiovascular diseases and are not good for the body.
- Many, many foods contain lipids. Meats, poultry, shellfish, fish, most dairy, egg yolks and even some vegetables like avocados are all sources of lipids. Even whole grains contain some lipids.
- When choosing foods that contain lipids, opt for ones that contain mostly unsaturated fats. These include lean proteins like chicken, lean cuts of beef, pork. Vegetables are also a potentially good source.
- Foods with saturated fats and trans fats are best avoided because they can up your chances of developing certain ailments like heart disease. To do so, stay away from fried foods and foods that contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are another type of fats, and one that is key to good health. Found in cold water fish, walnuts and other foods, it's recommended that you eat food containing omega-3s at least once a day. Since the body cannot manufacture omega-3s, like it can other fats, it's necessary to get these from food sources.
