How to Apply for a New Car Title

104 7
    • 1). Gather your latest car registration card, license or state ID, and proof of insurance to bring to your local DMV office. The address listed on these forms must match the address where you want to receive the new title in many cases (call your DMV office to confirm).

    • 2). Fill out the applicable form provided by your state DMV. The form commonly requests your contact information, vehicle identification number (VIN), descriptive information about the car and the reason why you are requesting a new title (lost, stolen or destroyed). Provide the current odometer reading if requested. If you have a title that was ripped or torn that you want to replace, bring it with you to the DMV office, and submit it with your form.

    • 3). Pay applicable duplicate title fees, and submit your application. Wait to receive your new title in the mail. The exact wait time varies by state, but could take anywhere between a few weeks to a few months.
