How to Rip Music From an iPod to a Computer

    • 1). Download and install CopyTrans or similar software. CopyTrans allows you to transfer, free of charge, up to 200 files. It will copy music, video and ratings. Download the free trial (see Resources section). After downloading, click on the icon located on your desktop to install.

    • 2). Copy files from your iPod. After CopyTrans has been installed, open the software by double-clicking on its desktop icon. After it loads, it will request that you plug in your iPod. Plug in your iPod; CopyTrans will automatically generate a list of all files located on your iPod.

    • 3). Select your transfer location. The default location in CopyTrans is iTunes, as in most other iPod transfer software. Make sure the location is correct at the top of the CopyTrans screen and click "Transfer" to move your files to iTunes. The iTunes program will automatically open and accept the transfer. It's now safe to sync with the computer.

    • 4). Choose an alternate transfer location. In the event you do not wish to rip the music into iTunes, you have the option to choose any media player that is located on your computer. Click on the transfer location bar to generate a list of media players. Click on the one you wish to use and begin the transfer.
