    • 1). Plant Carnation of India during mid-spring in a location that receives full sunlight and consists of highly fertile, well-draining soil for optimal growth. Space Carnation of India plants at least 3 to 6 feet from other plants to allow enough room for growth.

    • 2). Water once each week, allowing the soil to dry slightly between applications. Increase watering frequency to once every five days during extremely hot or dry weather. Never allow standing water to accumulate around Carnation of India, or the crown may rot.

    • 3). Feed once every two weeks using a water-soluble fertilizer. Follow the directions provided on the packaging label for proper application and dosage information. Do not fertilize during winter, when active growth has ceased.

    • 4). Prune lightly once every two to three months to keep the plant growing in a tight, compact form. Use pruning shears to trim away any excessively long or damaged branches to increase air circulation and improve the overall health of the plant.

    • 5). Extend the shrub's blooming period by removing spent Carnation of India flowers. Pinch off the flowers near their point of origin, or the area where they meet the stem, and new blossoms will replace them shortly thereafter.
