How to Make a Poem With Literary Words
- 1). Write what you feel. Poetry is about expressing emotions more than telling a story, and it's okay for the true meaning of the poem to lie under the surface.
- 2). Take advantage of figurative language, in which the words you use do not always mean what they seem. Similes and metaphors are the most common types of figurative language in poetry.
- 3). Master the art of alliteration. Alliteration occurs when several successive words start with the same consonant sound and can dramatically change the way your poem reads and sounds.
- 4). Reference other authors or stories through the art of allusion. Allusions are short mentions of characters or events from other literary works.
- 5). Learn how to incorporate irony into your work. Many poems are ironic in nature – irony simply means that circumstances in your poem are not what they appear and often are the exact opposite.
- 6). Rhyme if it works for you or is required in a particular assignment, but do not limit yourself to rhyming poetry. Many of the world’s most famous poets skipped rhyming and wrote in a more free-flowing style.
- 7). Try writing poetry in some of the more common formats while you learn the basics. Limericks, sonnets, haikus and quatrains are among the most commonly used and easy to understand.
