What Is AED Currency?
- ISO's currency codes are based on its country codes. In addition to a three-letter alphabetic currency code, there is a corresponding three-digit numeric code, which is 784 for the United Arab Emirates' dirham.
- AED currency is also represented as Dh or Dhs. Dirham notes are circulated in eight denominations: five, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000. The bills have distinguishing colors, decoration and security elements to prevent counterfeiting. They have Arabic writing and numbers on one side and English on the other.
- AED currency also comes in coins. A dirham is broken down into 100 fils, similar to how there are 100 pennies in a U.S. dollar. The coins are denominated as follows: one, five, 10, 25 and 50 fils. Vendors favor rounding up totals to the next-highest 25 fils.
