Personal Injury Lawyers

If you've been injured in a car accident, a slip and fall incident at a business, or in some other manner, you may end up needing to hire a lawyer to protect your interests or even to get the other party to accept responsibility.

The first thing to do when you are considering hiring a personal injury solicitor is to do your research. Don't jump at the first result from the phone book or an online search. If friends, family, coworkers, employers, or acquaintances have needed to use solicitors in personal injury cases before, ask them for recommendations. Don't be afraid to ask them who they wouldn't use again as well.

Once you've got a list of a few (or more) names of lawyers or law firms, research them online. Check out their website (if they have one), drive by their offices to get a feel for their attention to detail (if they aren't successful enough to keep the grounds presentable, maybe you should keep looking). Be sure to check with the bar in your state; if they have a lot of complaints, particularly about inactivity on cases or not being responsive to their clients, that should be another red flag. Checking with the Better Business Bureau is the next step you should take, especially if you're going with a firm rather than a sole practitioner.

After all the research is done, it's time to actually contact one or more of the lawyers or law firms on your list. Be aware that even if your chosen lawyer or law firm works on a contingency basis (they don't get paid unless you win, and then they get a portion of what you win) they may ask for an upfront retainer of anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00. There are two major reasons for this retainer; the first is a test to see if you are serious about proceeding with the case and the second is that there is work the lawyer or firm will have to do such as research, depositions, and the like before the case even goes to a jury or reaches the settlement state. Law firms and lawyers generally don't work for free even when the majority of their payment will come from the settlement, if any.
