Most of the pregnant women experience morning sickness during the early stages of their pregnancy. Normally it starts around 6th week of pregnancy and fades away around 16th week. The intensity and duration of it differs from woman to woman.

Listed below are some of the morning sickness symptoms:

Nausea

Most pregnant women experience the feeling of vomiting and nausea that is associated with it, though some may be immune to that. What causes it is a debatable subject; but most physicians seem to concur that the high levels of hormones in early stages of pregnancy is the main culprit. It is for the same reason some women suffer from acidity or heartburn during this period. Some women with a family history of migraine or travel sickness are more likely to get it.

Vomiting

Excessive vomiting and nausea will deplete body fluids to a dangerous level. This severe form of morning sickness is known as hypermesis gravidarum. At this stage, one must seek urgent medical help. However this is not common and only one in 250 women suffer from this extreme condition. Severe vomiting will lead to dehydration and weight loss.

Rapid breathing, dry tongue and lips, increased heartbeat are signs of dehydration.

Cravings for food

Vomiting leads to an empty stomach which in turn makes a pregnant woman hungry. It is advisable to keep munching on protein rich food in small quantities at regular intervals. Never keep your stomach empty and at the same time do not overeat.

Heightened sense of smell

Expectant mothers develop a higher sense of smell and taste. They find many smells obnoxious although normal persons may find them perfectly acceptable.

Headaches and cramps

For many women morning sickness symptoms may include cramps, headaches, constipation, darkening of areola, excessive salivation, sleep deprivation, tiredness, frequent urination and swollen breasts.

It is believed to be the body's defense mechanism trying to protect the unborn baby. Most women who experience it end up having healthy babies. It does not mean that the other way around is true. If you are one of those lucky women who are immune to it, have fun and enjoy your motherhood days.
