At the recently concluded meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr.
Maurizio Fava, M.
D.
, who headed a research study, reported that folic acid is very vital in brain development and in the health maintenance of the brain's components, especially in the metabolism and production of neurotransmitters, which is very critical to treating depression.
Fava and his associates measured the blood levels of folic acid in 189 people who were taking Prozac for 8 weeks.
While 40% who were deficient with folic acid displayed similar improvements after two months, 65% of them of who have normal folic acid levels remarkably benefited from the drug.
Their conclusion is that people who are having depression have the tendency to have low levels of folic acid, a nutrient that is abundant in most green leafy vegetables especially spinach, kale, enriched grains and even orange juice.
Moreover, Fava observed that people who were fighting depression with Prozac were less likely to benefit from it if they do not get enough of the nutrients especially folic.
Folate is the other name for folic acid.
It is Vitamin B9 that is crucial in the building blocks of cells and participates in the activities of the brain.
It is needed in making RNA and DNA and affects the production of some essential compounds and neurotransmitters-substances that are carriers of messages to several part of the brain.
Serotonin, one of the neurotransmitter that affects multiple functions of central nervous system including mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality and appetite, plays a key role in fighting and treating depression.
Eating green leafy vegetables is not only beneficial in treating depression; it can also make people healthy physically.
Moreover, if you are looking for ways to effectively lose weight, simple eating can help you achieve your health goals.
Of course, for clinical depressions that are also chronic and severe, simple eating of vegetables may not be sufficient.
Treating these serious depressions require other forms of treatments, lest, more damages may incur.
