Instructions for Making a Roman Toga

    Toga Material

    • A good toga requires a lot of material for a more complicated draped look. Start with material that is twice as long as you are tall, and twice the length of your arm span. This will give you ample material to work with. Select the color and type of material you desire, looking for a solid color and fabric that is heavy enough to drape nicely but light enough to be comfortable. Cut the fabric into an oval shape instead of a rectangle. This will create a better-looking toga because the edges will hang down evenly without any sharp corners. If you plan on reusing this costume several times and are concerned about durability, you might choose to hem around the outside of the oval. Fold one-quarter inch of fabric under and hem with a running stitch, moving the needle and thread in and out of the material at even intervals.

    Toga Folding

    • Fold the toga in half horizontally. Drape one side over your shoulder so it hangs down to the length you desire. This fabric around your shoulder will hold the toga in place. Wrap the rest of the toga around you. The end of the material can be thrown over your shoulder and rest on your forearm, creating a capelike look.

    Securing the Toga

    • Use some kind of belt or sash to secure the toga at the waist. You could use extra fabric that was discarded when cutting the material into an oval. To create a contrast, use a different solid colored fabric as a sash. For a more regal look, use a light woven rope, spray-painted gold.

    Additional Pieces

    • Unless you're going for a revealing look, wear a plain white shirt and light colored shorts underneath the toga. You can add accessories such as a crown of artificial leaves or sandals. To make a crown, purchase a length of artificial vine that is one and a half times the circumference of your head. Wrap the end pieces around each other to form a circle.
