    • 1). Determine if you are eligible to apply for citizenship. You must meet several factors for eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old and a permanent resident for at least five years; or you must be at least 18 years and married to a U.S. citizen. Second, you must be able to read, write and speak English, and have knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government. Third, you must have good moral character. Finally, you must have a favorable disposition with the U.S. government and be willing to defend the constitution.

    • 2). Complete the application form N-400 along with all proper documentation (See Resources).

    • 3). Obtain a passport-style photograph of yourself. The photo must be in color and will be used for your identification documents.

    • 4). Send your application form, required documents, and the service fee to the service center. The fee is $675 total as of February 2010. You can locate your service center online (See Resources).

    • 5). Get fingerprinted. You will receive a letter after you have applied indicating where you should get fingerprinted. After you have been fingerprinted, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.

    • 6). Go to the interview and be prepared to answer questions about your background and your application. You should bring identification with you to the interview. During this interview, you will have to complete an English and civics test.

    • 7). Take an oath to become a U.S. citizen if you have been accepted after the interview. You will be notified by mail when and where the ceremony will take place. After you recite the oath, you will officially be a U.S. citizen.
