How to Get Spyware Off My Browser

    • 1). Install an antispyware program on your computer if you don't already have one. There are many free options available for download, such as Spybot: S&D and Adaware. Links for downloading these applications are provided in the Resources section.

If you are worried about using your infected computer to download an application, or simply cannot access the Internet due to browser problems, download the application on another, uninfected computer. Place the installation file on a flash drive or burn it to a CD so you can transfer it to your computer.

    • 2). Close your browser and any other programs you may have running, then restart your computer. As your computer starts up, press the "F8" key on your keyboard. When the "Advanced Boot Options" menu appears, use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode," then press "Enter." Safe mode makes it easier to correct errors, install/remove programs and remove malicious applications--such as spyware--from your computer.

    • 3). Install and open the spyware application of your choice, then run a complete scan of your computer. When the scan is finished, delete all traces of spyware your computer finds. Restart your computer in its normal mode.

    • 4). Open your browser to make sure the spyware is gone. If the spyware was removed, your browser and computer should be free of spyware. You can test this by attempting to browse the Internet. Your browser should operate normally, free from intrusive pop-up ads, strange behaviors and errors. If you want to be extra sure, shut down your browser, open your antispyware application and perform another scan. You don't need to start in Safe Mode this time.
