    • When making introductions smile and make eye contact. Job interview rules apply here. Eye contact should last a few seconds. Less time and you seem dishonest; more time and you seem aggressive. Handshakes should be firm but not bone crushing. Speak clearly when introducing yourself or others. This is your opportunity for a first impression and mispronounced names are a pain to correct in the long run.

    When Introducing Yourself to Others

    • When introducing yourself the impression that you are trying to project is one of confidence and friendliness. To that end, you don't want to put off making introductions for too long. When introducing yourself to someone who is engaged in a conversation with another, wait for a natural break in the discussion. This does not have to be a point of pure silence, just don't interrupt when a discussion is building up to a climax.

    Introducing Two or More People to Each Other

    • A proper introduction is the cornerstone of good hosting. When you are having a party, it is unlikely that all your guests will know each other. Before the event make mental pairings of your guest. If your have a friend who is a woodworker, you might introduce her to another friend who is a sculptor, which may increase the odds of them having an interesting conversation.

    • When making business introductions titles are important. Everyone has a title. The point of introductions are not only to let people know the name of who you are introducing them to, but also how they relate to you. You'll want to give facts about the people you are introducing so that when you move on they will have something to talk about.

    Ranking

    • The form of your introductions will be determined by the ranking or relative authority of the two people whom you are introducing. This can be disconcerting to some people. In most societies people are considered to have equally inherent value, regardless of their job, wealth or age. But is important to note that we are talking about rank not importance. It is also important to include titles when making introductions, they can be an important facts that will aid in conversations between parties.
