How to Install RAM Into a Windows Desktop PC

    • 1). Turn off the power to the machine and unplug all power cords. Removing hardware when a computer is running can cause permanent damage, and the chance for electrical shock is great when the machine is plugged in.

    • 2). Remove the computer case, which is normally done by unscrewing a large round screw on the left side of the tower if looking at it from the front. Remove the RAM stick by folding the small clips at either end away from the RAM, and gently pulling out the component. It can be pulled by walking it from end to end, or by holding it firmly in the middle and applying steady outward pressure.

    • 3). Install the new RAM by lining up the notches so it goes in the same way the old stick came out. Firmly but smoothly press in the new RAM stick, and lock it in with the clips at the end in the opposite of removal.

    • 4). Turn on the machine. Most machines will immediately recognize the new RAM and simply start up like normal, but if a diagnostic screen opens which tells the user that new hardware has been found, just continue and it should install smoothly from there. Reinstall the casing and it is done!
