How to Make a Mirrored Skirt for Wedding Cakes

    • 1). Visit your local lumber or hardware store to purchase a 4-inch segment of PVC pipe. Because this comes from the end of a very large pipe, the customer service assistant will cut it for you. These pipes sell by the linear foot for water mains and culverts and they make a good base for a mirrored skirt. Have a piece cut at least 2 inches in diameter larger than the bottom layer of your cake.

    • 2). Have a round piece of mirror cut at your local glass retailer. It should be at least ¼-inch thick with finished edges to prevent cuts. In addition, take your PVC ring to the glasscutter and explain that you need the mirror to be exactly ¼-inch wider in diameter.

    • 3). Measure a round circle from the plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw or a band saw. The plywood will be the exact size as the diameter of the PVC pipe. Use the pipe as a template by placing it on the plywood and drawing around it. Make sure you cut on the inside edge of the line for a good fit.

    • 4). Position the plywood circle on top of the PVC pipe by laying the plywood face down on a flat surface and putting the PVC ring on top of it. Glue it into place and allow the glue to set before you turn it right side up and hammer a few finish nails through the plywood into the pipe below.

    • 5). Glue the mirrored top on the plywood, making sure the overhang is even on all sides. Allow the pedestal to sit until the glue is firm.

    • 6). Draw a vertical line on the PVC tube that extends from just under the mirrored top to the bottom of the PVC. This is what you will use to align the craft mirrors.

    • 7). Begin on the line and use glass glue to place the first mirror on the line, even with the underside of the round mirror top. Since the craft mirrors are 1-inch in length, you will place three more mirrors below the first one. Repeat this process all the way around the PVC pipe until you reach the backside.
