With the ever increasing awareness of dwindling resources and the damage being done to the environment, more and more people want to know how to save energy and cut down on waste.
Much of the damage done is irreversible, but with education and a determined effort, maybe we can look to a greener future.
Here are five basic green tips you can act on right now.
#1 Change your light bulbs to more energy efficient ones.
Traditional light bulbs waste 98% of their energy generating heat, energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs provide the same brightness as a traditional bulb for 20% of the energy.
#2 Choose recycled paper.
Over 40% of all logged timber is used to make paper, and paper makes up 25% of all waste in land fill sites.
With forests being logged at a rate of 90 acres per day, recycling paper is a must.
#3 Get green power.
An ever increasing number of power companies have a green power option, you can tick a box and you will receive power from wind and solar generated sources.
Check with your utility company to find out more.
#4 Buy organic local foods.
It is estimated that most foods travel an average of 1500 miles before they get to you, which will obviously have an adverse effect on the environment.
Organic foods will not have been exposed to fertilizers and pesticides which can harm the environment.
#5 Correct tire pressures will improve your mileage by an average of 5%.
If all the tires on American roads were properly inflated, we would save 2 billion gallons of gasoline a year.
