What should be included in a dental health check

105 1
Did you know that when you go to the dentist there are a whole list of checks
they should perform.
This is to ensure that your stay dentally healthy and to prevent the spread or
oral diseases which as often difficult to detect at home. We thought you might like to know exactly what we think
those checks should be so you can be sure of finding the best dentist for you.

Of course the check listed here are in no way intended to replace actually
visiting a dentist.

What does a 15 point Dental Health Check include?

1. Question - How healthy do you feel your teeth and gums are at the moment?

2. Question - Do you have any problems?
Typically we would look for signs of redness, soreness and/or bleeding when
brushing

3. Medical status update.

4. Lifestyle check (diet, alcohol, smoking, stress)
- excessive use of any of these can result in poor oral hygiene, ultimately
leading to tooth loss

5. Discussion on progress since last visit

6. Question - How happy are you with the appearance of your teeth and gums?
Depending on your answer we can decide if any cosmetic options could work for
you

7. Check on the health of the teeth.

8. Check on the stability of the restorations.
This is looking at existing crowns, veneers and fillings to ensure there is a
tight seal and that bacteria can not get to the underlying tooth

9. Check on the health of the gums.

10. Check on the health of the inside of the mouth i.e. tongue, lips and cheeks
(oral cancer check).

11. Check on the presence of plaque.

12. Check on the health of areas under, between and inside the teeth.

13. Check on the health of the bone.

14. Check on the health of the jaw.

15. Check on the health of lymph glands and thyroid.

At the end of the Dental Health Check your dentist should give you a report on
the 15 points along with advice on how to get healthy or how to stay healthy.
This should always form part of a long term treatment plan for you as 'piece
meal' dentistry i.e. doing dentistry tooth by tooth with no overall plan, often
leads to poor dental health in the future
