How to Reattach Loose Wires on a Home AC Compressor

    • 1). Locate the loose wires if you haven't already done so. If an appliance is operating erratically, such as a stuttering on-off operation, the problem can be a loose wire, which can be found with a visual inspection. Make sure AC power is removed from the device before inspecting.

    • 2). Remove the loose wire from its connection. The wire could be connected to a terminal block, in which case you simply unscrew the terminal to remove the wire. If it's a soldered connection, cut the wire as close to the connection as possible.

    • 3). Cut any loose wire strands from the end of the wire. These could cause an electrical short circuit.

    • 4). Strip a half-inch of insulation from the end of the wire. This will help to ensure a good connection when the wire is reconnected.

    • 5). Reattach the wire to the connection. If it's a terminal block, wrap the wire portion of the end of the wire clockwise around the terminal screw and tighten the screw. Make sure the screw is secured tightly as compressor vibration could cause the screw to loosen. If it's a soldered connection, wrap the metal end of the wire around the terminal. Take your hot soldering iron and touch the wire and terminal, applying solder at the same time. Remove the iron when the solder melts.

    • 6). Check your connection visually. Turn on the device to see if your connection works.
