What You Need to Know About College Cheerleading

If you want to try out for a college cheerleading squad, then that is awesome, but there are several things you need to know about college cheerleading and what it requires. While this is not NFL or NBA level, college cheerleading requires a high-caliber athlete and total dedication. There are certain things to know about the collegiate cheerleading world.

The Tryouts

The first thing to know about tryouts is that they are in the spring time and depending on where you are trying out, it could take more than just one day. You should really expect that the tryouts will take the whole weekend. Due to the long time at the tryout, try to make friends; should you make the squad, the girls that you meet at the tryout will be your friends for the next four years and can end up being very beneficial.

The second thing to know about the tryouts is how they will be formatted. Unlike in high school and junior high, the tryouts will not be focused on your ability to do a simple cheer and have enthusiasm but rather on skills; for college tryouts, coaches expect you to do tumbling, skills, and certain stunts to be done.

The Camp

In college, the cheer camps are not as high strung as those in college, which, I am sure confuses you since I just said how the tryouts are tougher and the fact that it is college cheerleading.

In college cheer camp, it is important to know the focus is on the prep for football and basketball games. The prep for these is a very important part of the camp since the basketball and football games are big money makers for universities. The prep will also be focusing on upholding traditions and integrity of the school's sports teams.

The Practices

In college, the practices are much more focused. They tend to focus on a specific aspect of the squad per practice and hit it hard.

A second thing to know about the practices is that they vary in times. Since you are in college, you will have classes at different times in the day and so will your teammates. Consequently, the times of practice will adapt to everyone's schedules.

Game Time!!

This is a much bigger deal now that you are in an environment that is much more exciting. Now that you are a college cheerleader, the fans in the stands are actually true fans; they care about when the team wins or loses, they care about the money they just laid out for a ticket, and they actually want to represent the team in any way they can. Due to all this, the excitement and precision of your squad's efforts during the game are top notch and precise.
