How to Paint Headboards
- 1). Lightly sketch the outline of the bed onto the wall with a pencil. Move the bed out of the way.
- 2). Lay a tarp onto the floor.
- 3). Sketch the headboard shape that you want onto the wall. Use a yardstick and level to ensure that all lines are straight and even. You can also print patterns from the Internet, which can be cut out and used as stencils.
- 4). Apply pieces of low-tack painter's tape around the headboard outline to protect the portions of the wall that you do not want painted. If the headboard has holes in it, cut pieces of tape to cover those areas as well.
- 5). Apply a coat of primer to the exposed portion of the wall if the paint is a dark color. If your walls are light, proceed directly to paint.
- 6). Apply the background color for your headboard with a paintbrush or roller. This will work better in two thin coats rather than one thick one; you will reduce the risk of drips or pooling.
- 7). Paint additional patterns or textures onto the headboard if desired.
- 8). Cut along the edges of the tape gently, using a sharp razor blade to prevent the paint from sticking.
- 9). Peel the tape off the wall carefully.

Add details such as lace trim or a line of nails with decorative heads if desired. Any trim or fabric can be attached to the wall with a hot-glue gun. - 11
Put the bed back in place.
