How to File Back Taxes in Missouri
- 1). Locate the form for the year or years you need to file Missouri State taxes. The Missouri Department of Revenue allows you to look up and download prior year returns from their online forms and manuals list by entering the form number and year you need.
- 2). Complete your income tax return for each prior year you have not filed. To fill out your tax forms use the manual provided for each individual year and your tax information from your employers and financial institutions.
- 3). Review very carefully all of the information you provided on your prior year returns. Mistakes could cost additional fees and penalties or they could cost you more if you miss a deduction or credit -- this is provided you are still eligible to receive credits for prior years as each becomes null after a certain amount of time.
- 4). Mail your return, along with the amount of tax you owe, to the Missouri Department of Revenue. Locate the correct mailing address in your instruction manuals. If you do not owe taxes and are filing back taxes within three years of the original due date then you are still eligible to receive your refund and may check the status of your refund within two to four weeks after mailing your returns.
