How to Fix Scratched Plastic
- 1). Determine the kind of plastic you have. This will determine the method you will need to use to fix the scratched plastic.
- 2). If fixing scratches in plastic eyeglass lenses, Make magazine recommends dabbing a bit of Armour Etch, available at craft stores, on your glasses. Let the Armour Etch sit on your lenses for about five minutes, then remove it with water and a towel. This may remove the coating off of your glasses, so always test a small area before doing the entire lens. Do not use this method on glass.
- 3). If repairing scratched plastic such as the kind used in CD coatings, you can also dab a bit of white toothpaste, making sure your toothpaste does not have any small particles in it that could cause more scratching. Gently rub the toothpaste onto the plastic using your hand. Let the toothpaste sit and wipe it off gently with a damp cloth.
- 4). Consider a specialty scratch remover kit. A kit such as Merlin LCD Magic or the Novus system would give you several steps. Consult the instructions for each of these multistep kits.
- 5). If you have a plastic buffer, you can also run the plastic gently along the buffer to clear out any scratches. This works best on uncoated plastics.
