Before you start treatment for dandruff you should speak with your doctor.
Your doctor will be able to check that it is dandruff or another ailment.
Treatment for dandruff is widely available, products range from shampoo to medicated lotions, some treatments are available to buy and some can only be obtained with a prescription.
Dandruff happens because skin cells are production at a fast pace, this means that they run out of life faster too and the build up of dead cells causes the flakes that we hate.
It can be itchy, and downright annoying especially when the flakes drop all over your clothes.
For some the treatment can not come soon enough.
Treatment for dandruff comes in many different forms.
These could be; Medicated shampoo, available at most supermarkets.
This form of treatment can be up to 90 % effective, and is recommended for use before other treatments are tried.
Zinc pyrithione, this is an anti-fungal cream, that decreases yeast production.
Salicylic acid, this treatment is effective in removing the dead cells, you may feel like you have a drier scalp after treatment.
Ketoconazole, this has been found to be highly effective, it helps reduce the amount of cells that are produced and it also helps the removal of the dead cells.
Selenium sulfide, this helps prevent that itchy feeling and aids in the removal of the flakes.
Coal tar extract, this is a medicated shampoo available only on prescription, this helps remove the dead cells and can improve any soreness and itching.
This product has a distinctive smell and should not be used for lengthy periods of time.
If the treatments for dandruff listed above are not your style you may want to consider a more natural treatment.
These natural treatments include; Peppermint tea, this product has most of the active ingredients that a medicated shampoo has.
By having 1 cup of peppermint tea per day, you may significantly reduce the amount of dandruff you have.
Liquorice, many people say it is bad to eat sweets, but in this case you could say it is fine.
Liquorice can reduce the amount of cells that are being produced in your body.
Tea tree oil or shampoo, this is an anti-fungal aids dry skin and reduces dandruff flakes.
This product is also good at preventing head lice.
This is effective as an oil, shampoo or spray and can be found at all supermarkets.
If after prolonged use of a treatment for dandruff you notice no change speak with your doctor, you may need a different treatment that requires a prescription.
Alternatively you may wish to try a combination of both a shampoo and a natural treatment, like a herbal tea.
Treatment for dandruff is affordable and effective, some treatments may not suit your needs so I would advise that you speak with a pharmacist or doctor, they will be able to tell you how effective each treatment is and then you can choose accordingly.
