Instructions for Cooking a Simple Prime Rib
- 1). Bring the prime rib roast to room temperature. Take the prime rib out of the refrigerator and let it sit out for 30 minutes on a platter or plate. The prime rib will cook better if it is brought to room temperature rather than just placing it cold in the oven.
- 2). Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
- 3). Take 2 tbsp. pat of butter and rub it into both ends of the prime rib roast. This helps to keep both end cuts tender during cooking.
- 4). Place the roast in a roasting pan with the ribs facing down.
- 5). Sear the prime rib roast for 15 minutes. The higher heat used during the searing process caramelizes the sugars in the meat and browns the proteins. This helps the rib develop a more appealing color and flavor.
- 6). Lower the oven temperature to 325 degrees. Cook the prime rib for a half hour. Brush the prime rib roast with a basting brush. Use the fat on the bottom of the pan to baste the roast.
- 7). Cook for another half hour. Use the basting brush to brush the fat from the bottom of the pan onto the prime rib roast. Check the temperature of the meat with a meat thermometer. The USDA states to cook until the roast reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees. This will give you a medium-rare roast.
