The race comprises of a long boat, called snake boat, manned by four helmsmen, 25 singers and 100 - 125 oarsmen who row in unison to the fast rhythm of the vanchipattu.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race: this famous race held annually on the Punnamada Backwaters of Alappuzha district on the 2nd Saturday of August month.
More than 16 snake boats or Chundans participate in the race, and there are separate boats for women race.
Aranmula Boat Race: it is another most famous event of Kerala, held every year, on the Pampa River near the Sree Parthasarathy Temple, as a part of Onam celebrations.
The snake boats are known as Palliyodams.
The whole environment is emerged in the cheering sound of race lovers and songs of the singers.
Payippad Boat Race: Also known as Payippad Jalotsavam, held in memory of the installation of the deity at Haripad Subrahmanya Temple has a religious significance.
