Usage of Golden Grid System in PSD to HTML Conversion
Before reading about the usage of the Golden Grid system, you should understand what it is.
A Golden Grid system is a web based system which is supposed to be a CSS tool for grid based web sites.
Many designers now use the golden grid system as the main starting point for building websites.
The best thing about this is that it is easy to learn and makes the conversion process easy, simple and efficient.
Now that you now what the golden grid is, it is now time to discuss about how this system will help us in making effective web sites.
This grid uses columns, the splits the screen into 18 even columns in which two of them, which are the outer left and outer right are used as margins.
The remaining 16 columns are used for design.
The Golden Grid system consists of four features: • The folding columns • Elastic gutters • Zoom able baseline grid • Golden Gridlet It is now time to discuss each of these features one by one and see how they will help us in PSD to HTML conversion.
The folding columns You must have remembered that in the beginning I told you there are a total of 18 even columns in which 16 of them are used for designing.
Now, 16 columns may look like an awful lot for designing and many people might be thinking how this can be managed in small monitors such as tablet sized screens and mobile sized screens.
This is where the feature, the folding columns feature comes in.
The folding columns as the name suggest is able to fold or combine the 16 columns into 8 or 4 columns for tablet sized and mobile sized screen.
So, here is where one of the usage of the Golden Grid system.
With this feature it can easily cover any screen size ranging from 240 - 2560 pixels.
Elastic Gutters Gutters are the spaces between the columns and are proportional to the page's font size.
When the grid uses gutters, not elastic gutters, it makes the content looks as if it is being squeezed together or is being pulled apart according to the width of the screen.
This can prove to be a big problem and will no doubt have a negative side effect on the design of the web page.
For this reason elastic gutters are being used which positions the elements in the center of the gutter using percentages and gives them a padding which is equal to the half of the gutters width.
So, with this feature the content will not look distorted at all.
Zoomable Baseline Grid With Zoomable baseline grid you do not have to worry about the font size which may change due to the size of the screen.
If the font size, line height, vertical padding, margin, and borders are all specified in ems they will scale according to the size of the font.
So, if the size changes due to the change in the screens width the layout will look the same.
Golden Gridlet This feature will help you to check the design elements align up.
Just click the small button on the upper right corner of the screen and you will be able to see the golden grid system and will be able to check the design elements align up.
Here are the usages of the golden grid system in PSD to HTML conversion.
This system may look and sound scary but I assure you it's not once you get the hang of it.
