This yields a very interesting organo-metallic medicine. Most herbal Rasayana rejuvenation and longevity tonics include Amla (Amalaki, Indian Gooseberry) as a component. Indian Gooseberry, rich in antioxidants in the form of tannins and other polyphenols, also contains trace minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium, zinc, iron, etc. Medical research on Indian Gooseberry indicates that it has antiviral and antimicrobial properties. It has also been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and regulate functions of the liver. The Harada (Har, Harre, Harataki) tree and its fruit are considered sacred and have so many uses in Ayurveda that it is enough to describe it as a universal cure-all verging on a super food. It addresses many of the same conditions as gold does. Here is what the Caraka has to say about these fruit:

"They are light [as food]. They enkindle digestive fire, and are good digestive aids. They promote longevity and induce nourishment. They deserve every praise. They prevent the effects of age more than any other drug. They alleviate all varieties of ailments, and impart strength to the intellect and the senses.

They quickly conquer vitiligo, abdominal tumors, flatulence, edema, chlorosis, alcoholism, piles, ailments of the duodenum, chronic intermittent fever, diseases of the chest, diseases of the head, diarrhea, disgust for food, cough, gonorrhea, epistasis, enlargement of the spleen, abdominal dropsy when new, discharge of phlegm matter, hoarseness of the voice, discoloration or loss of complexion, anemia, intestinal worms, waste of main body components, some forms of asthma, vomiting, loss of virility, weakness of the limbs, blockage of ducts of various kinds, sensation like a wet blanket covering the chest, a similar sensation in the heart, and dullness of the memory and understanding. Those who are suffering from indigestion, those who habitually take dry food and drink, those who have been weakened by sexual indulgence and wine and poisons, and those who are afflicted by hunger and thirst and heat, should eat myrobalans."

Contemporary research on Triphala conducted by several leading academic institutions, reinforcing the claims of the Caraka, reveals that Triphala has significant medical value as a potential detoxifying and anti-cancer agent, increases tolerance to radiation and is a powerful anti-oxidant. It's not surprising that this combination of fruits are commonly bound with gold as the organic material in an organo-gold medicine.

Ancient Indian texts have much to say about the benefits of Swarna Bhasma. The Caraka mentions that those who take Swarna Bhasma regularly are completely unaffected by poisons. The Susruta lists four elixirs which contain Swarna Bhasma to specifically improve the physical strength and cognitive function of children. The Rasendracudamani claims that those who ingest Swarna Bhasma for 10 years will live out the duration of their lives disease free. The Rasaprakasasudhakra states that ingesting Swarna Bhasma delays the onset of the aging process.

Research has shown Swarna Bhasma to display analgesic activity, modification of specific and non-specific immune responses in a positive manner, antioxidant activity and restorative effects. Clinical studies indicate a nootropic effect (increase of cognitive function with imperceptible side-effects), significant increase in acquisition, retention and learning scores and improvement in cognition. It also exhibited adaptogenic and immunomodulatory activities, a wide therapeutic index and lack of weight loss or perceived adverse effects at an effective dose of 25 mg/kg orally for 7 to 10 days.

One of the benefits of processing Swarna Bhasma by mechanical levigation is that the medicinal properties of the organic material are much more pronounced, bonding directly to the gold, disguising it as food thus enhancing bio-availability - meaning we digest it more efficiently. The drawback is that it may be exposed for weeks to an un-sterile environment collecting dust particles, microbes, etc. Regardless of which method is used, Swarna Bhasma, because it is a nanoparticulate, is small enough to be directly ingested into the bloodstream by placing it under the tongue. Alternately, it may be taken with honey and absorbed in the gastro-intestinal tract.
