How to Remove Leaves From an Above Ground Pool
- 1). Empty both your skimmer and pump baskets of trapped leaves that accumulate before they have a chance to decompose.
- 2). Use a pool extension pole with a leaf skimmer attachment to remove all leaves floating on the surface.
- 3). Use a pool extension pole with a deep net attachment to remove leaves grouped on the pool floor. Approach the leaves slowly, without scattering the pile, and repeat the process until you remove the majority of the leaves.
- 4). Vacuum the remaining leaves and leaf particles immediately before decomposition continues. Your manual vacuum system, which consists of a pool extension pole, a vacuum head and a vacuum hose will remove all of this debris and send it to the filter where the filter media can trap it.
- 5). Check your filter pressure gauge to make sure that excessive pressure is not present as a result of vacuuming. If an increase of between 8- to 10-lbs. of pressure occurs over your normal baseline pressure, backwash your filter or clean the filter cartridge, depending on whichever filtering system you have.
- 6). Remove massive amounts of unseen leaves that may have accumulated on the bottom of a murky pool by vacuuming them to waste. Place the vacuum head attached to your extension pole close to where you think the leaves have accumulated, turn the filter setting to waste and turn on the pump.
- 7). Observe the amount of leaves exiting the pool in the wastewater that is coming from the bottom of the pool. Continue the process until the amount of leaves diminishes to just a few.
- 8). Stop the pump, and refill the pool to its normal height.
- 9). Test the water, and make any necessary balancing chemical adjustments to the alkalinity, pH and calcium hardness. Once completed, shock the pool with chlorine shock as you normally do, and add a regular dose of algaecide. Filter the water, and keep adding additional shock treatments every hour until clarity restores.

Vacuum any remaining debris or leaves from your clear pool that you see on the bottom, and continue vacuuming with your filter system set to the filter setting.
