How to Teach Kids to Measure Food
- 1). Prepare the recipe or lesson by placing bowls of dry ingredients and measuring spoons out on the counter or tabletop.
- 2). Have your child stand on a step stool so his torso is level with the counter or tabletop.
- 3). Instruct your child to measure a tablespoon of flour, sugar, salt or other dry ingredient by spooning the tablespoon into the substance and lifting the spoon, keeping it above the bowl to prevent counter spills.
- 4). Explain to your child that this is a rounded tablespoon.
- 5). Place the small spatula in your child's hand, and help them to drag it across the tablespoon. Explain that this is a level tablespoon.
- 6). Continue with measuring instruction per recipe directions or by experimenting with different measuring spoons and dry ingredients.

- 4). Bend down with your child so your eyes are even with the counter, and read the measuring cup at eye level to ensure the measurement is accurate.
- 5). Adjust the measurement with your child by adding or pouring out the liquid as needed.
