What Is Acidophilus Bifidus?

    Function

    • Acidophilus bifidus, and the 20 other strains of identified probiotics, work in the digestive tract by balancing the pH of the stomach and intestines and also by assisting the natural digestive enzymes that break down ingested food. The enzymes in the stomach and intestines are typically acidic elements that, if it weren't for probiotics, would make the overall pH of the digestive tract uncomfortably low. However, the bacteria balance pH out, helping digestion to run smoothly and food to be processed at optimal levels.

    Issues

    • There are several ways the colonies of acidophilus bifidus can be reduced in the digestive tract. One common action that can significantly decrease the number of microorganisms in the stomach is the abuse of harsh cleansing agents or laxatives which strip the colonies out of the system and eliminate them as waste. Harmful microorganisms such as stomach parasites, viruses and bad bacteria can also cause a similar demolition of probiotic colonies. Eating a diet that's high in fat and carbohydrates and low in lean meats and dairy products can also reduce numbers of the bacteria.

    Consequences

    • When probiotic colonies found in the digestive tract are out of balance, a human can experience a variety of symptoms. Common digestive symptoms include constipation or diarrhea, abdominal bloating and an increase in gas due to the improper digestion of food. Some research has also suggested that immune function, cholesterol and blood pressure can also be negatively affected by low levels of acidophilus in the system.

    Considerations

    • To increase the acidophilus presence in the digestive tract, all humans need to do is ingest it. Acidophilus bifidus can be purchased as an over-the-counter dietary supplement in the form of tablets or capsules which contain live cultures of the microorganism. Many yogurts, milks and other dairy products are also available which include high levels of acidophilus to supplement the colonies already in the digestive tract and keep them strong.

    Effects

    • Individuals who begin taking acidophilus on a daily basis will notice an improvement in their digestive regularity and abdominal comfort within the first week. However, acidophilus bifidus can produce several side effects, especially in the first few weeks of use, including diarrhea, watery stools, abdominal bloating and cramping. These side effects should decrease steadily over time.
