Teaching painting to kids needs a lot of patience and answering their questions and clarifying their doubts is a big task. If one suppress from asking questions, or if one does not clarify their doubts properly, they might end up getting all confused and it will be a big stress on their mind. It would be difficult for kids to learn to hold the brush or mix the paint, they can end up being messy, hence children need an art teacher who is kind, patient, and intelligent along with being artistic.

The tools should be good. Ask the parents of pupils to get them good quality brushes, recommend some brands that you think are good. Quality of the tools matters a lot when it comes to painting. A good brush can do wonders. A sloppy piece of work can even demotivate the kid. Kids can also sense a better quality tool as they are also pretty capable of observing the difference in the work. A good quality brush will spread the paint easily and smoothly.

Painting lessons for kids is not just about teaching them how to apply colours on the paper but also how to use their arm to apply those colours. For broad paint strokes teach kids to use big, sweeping arm movements and for small strokes teach them how to use small movements of the arm. Teach them to use different stroke methods and observe the difference with each different stroke.

It is better if the kids starts learning with good quality tube paints from the beginning than those small palettes that are meant for kids. In the beginning, some paint might get wasted but sooner or later they will value the paints and learn to use it sparingly and as much as it is needed. Also they will be confident when they have to mix two colours as variation in quantity of two different colours can give different range of dullness or brightness to the same colour. They will love to experiment and this way they will also develop their knowledge about colours and end result of a combination of two colours.

Give them a topic and allow them to use their imagination to draw and paint whatever they want related to the topic. Help and encourage them in a gentle way if they need any assistance. Introduce them to the quality of the papers too. It is important for the kids to learn what are the good quality products that give better results. Teach them slowly about different kinds of papers and canvas and the different mediums of colours that they can experiment with.

Painting lessons for kids should not just be limited to learning how to paint, but should also boost them with their all round knowledge. Kids should also get to learn about different types of tools used, confident colour mixing; types of brushes, their numbers and types of bristles; types of papers and canvases, types of mediums available, and also about art history, and famous works of art, how to observe and identify nature's beauty, how to be sensitive to the surrounding, etc. These things will not just make them good artists but also it will develop them into better individuals with great personality and great knowledge.
