Diagnosing a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst - A Bizarre Condition Unveiled

No woman ever wants to hear that she has an ovarian cyst.
While some of these types of cysts are totally benign, they can still cause a tremendous amount of pain and anxiety.
One type of cyst which is typically benign is called a dermoid ovarian cyst.
The strange thing about this kind of cyst is that it typically contains other kinds of tissues from the hair, bone, thyroid and teeth.
These cysts usually develop from a particular kind of cell from inside the egg sac, also called the ovary.
The cyst can be created from a single cell that is from any area of the body.
They are normally filled with a greasy substance that contains things like hair, cartilage and even teeth.
They can happen at any age, but normally they are detected during the childbearing years.
The average age at diagnosis is 30 years old.
How the cyst is treated is very important for a woman of this age.
About 15% of women find out that they have dermoid cysts in both ovaries.
They can range in size from less than a half inch to 17 inches in diameter.
They can endanger a woman's fertility because they can cause the ovary to twist and cut off the blood supply.
If the dermoid is larger, it has a bigger risk of rupturing and spilling its contents which causes pain and possible adhesions.
While most dermoid ovarian cysts are benign (about 98%), some of the 2% left over can become cancerous.
They can be removed using a laparotomy or a laparoscopy.
If the cyst gets twisted, that is an emergency situation and needs to be treated with surgery urgently.
Cutting off the blood supply to an ovary can endanger a woman's fertility.
Having a dermoid ovarian cyst removed should not affect future fertility.
However, leaving it in place can end up causing rupture and pain.
If a cyst ruptures, that can also cause adhesions which can hamper future fertility.
Having ovarian cysts can be anxiety provoking and worrisome for women, so it is important to have the doctor really investigate what is going on and formulate a plan of action.
