    • 1). Listen to the other person as they speak. It is a lot easier to negotiate when you are aware of what the other person is saying. If you listen carefully, you can pick up a lot more from the tone of voice.

    • 2). Be aware of nonverbal actions, both on your part and the other person's. Many people believe that it takes a lot of practice and skill to pick up nonverbal signals from another person, but it doesn't have to be that hard. Certain things (sweating, fidgeting, shifty eyes, clenched jaw, etc.) can give away a person's nervousness or anger, and you can use that to your advantage.

    • 3). Know when you should speak. Don't interupt.. Let the other person stop talking before you begin. Not only is it a common courtesy, but it will make you appear calm and patient.

    • 4). Try to see what the other person is seeing. If you can see the other person's perspective, you will have a better chance of negotiating the terms so that you are both satisfied. You should be aware of the person's intent and reluctance to negotiate your way. Once that if figured out, your argument can be easily developed.

    • 5). Do not get overwhelmed. Sometimes you will be faced with a situation where you are negotiating with a number of people instead of an individual. This can be a lot to handle, but do not let it get to you. The same rules apply; you'll just have be be more patient and alert when more people are involved.

    • 6). Keep your goal(s) in mind. When negotiating, you shouldn't have a finite goal. It will appear as though you have failed if you get anything less. Instead, you should approach it with a general goal in mind. Have a range in which you wish to meet the person.

    • 7). Be flexible when going into the negotiations. Both parties should have to make compromises in the end. It is very rare to go in with both people wanting the same terms. Instead, you should expect to give and take. If you have certain points in which you cannot loosen up, let the person be aware of them.

    • 8). Do not insult or put anyone down during negotiations. That can make the whole matter tense and the person will get upset. Be polite from start to finish. This is a matter of self-control.
