Trying to know about the foods that cause acne is like trying to interpret a quotation without reference to the context. As a prerequisite we must first know about the consumer profile, the contents of food, composition and quality of the contents as well as the quantity consumed.

Food consumption or eating is like performing arts. An expert may produce melodies from a simple flute made of common reed while a non artist may be very clumsy even with the use of an expensive electronic guitar. Similarly if you know about food, you may benefit from foods that have reputation to cause acne without having acne. On the other hand if you are interested only in eating, you may end up with acne.

Fibreless foods

As a rule of thumb, all foods which are devoid of or lacking in fiber content are pro-acne. All foods having lot of fiber as in vegetables and salads are less likely to cause acne even if there are some contents known to favor acne development. The same applies to the quantity of consumed food. Overconsumption of carefully selected foods will most probably do you more harm than good. There is a saying, popularly known among food technologists or nutritionist that, "we are, what we eat". Consuming lot of fat, you can not expect to be of a slim stature. Similarly, avoiding vegetables, fruits, salads and refraining from drinking water in ample quantity, is like inviting acne blemishes on your face. It is not only the food content but the food composition that matters.

Lesser known food ingredients

From acne point of view, water and fiber are the most important but least considered contents. In addition to the macro nutrients (Carbohydrates, fats and proteins), the micronutrients (minerals, salts, vitamins) too influence the development of acne. A food devoid of micronutrients (zinc for example) has all the potential to cause acne. Another consideration is the pH of the consumed food. Low pH foods, in general favor acne development, though a few exceptions are there.

Chocolate myth and fact

A popular myth is that chocolate causes acne while the fact is that Cocoa Butter; the fat used in choclate production is known for its value in skincare and it is used all over the world in production of cosmetics like cold creams. Solid chocolates do not cause acne while the filled chocolates may, because they contain fats of various origins produced with different methods like fractionation or hydrogenation, the later being more likely to favor acne production. Most of other confectionery articles like candies, toffees, jellies etc have potential to cause acne, mainly on account of high sugar content and secondarily on account of the use of hydrogenated or plastic fats.
