Marriage isn't a commitment most people take lightly. We invest a great deal of ourselves into our marriages, and when things start to come apart, it can feel overwhelming. Almost all couples will run into some struggles during the course of their relationship and may even consider divorce. If you are in this position right now there are ways to save a marriage that you need to be aware of if you aren't ready to give up on your spouse.

One of the simplest ways to save a marriage is to forgive your spouse. A relationship can't flourish if there are unresolved issues between the partners. Regardless of what they have done and how much it has hurt you, if you still love your spouse and envision a future that includes them, you must try and forgive them and put the past in the past.

Compliment your spouse more. Taking the person we love for granted is an easy thing to do. When the day-to-day pressures of life take hold it can be difficult to remember to do little things to make the life of your partner easier. Complimenting them is one great way to let them know how much you value them. Another is to surprise them with small gifts. It doesn't have to be anything expensive. Prepare the dinner they love or arrange a baby sitter so you can have an entire evening to yourselves. Showing your spouse that you appreciate them is one of the best ways to save a marriage.

Try to be as communicative as possible when you are trying to save your marriage. Tell your partner what it is you need from the relationship and be willing to accept what they need too. Try to stay open minded and calm when you two discuss your problems. Placing blame or refusing to talk won't help save your marriage. In fact, it can lead to even more trouble down the road.

Don't let the children come between the two of you. There's no denying that children change a relationship between two people. If you or your spouse is spending all your time focusing on the children, you need to ask for help. Look to a babysitter or family member to tend to the children. Work out any issues that you may be fighting over in relation to the kids. It's important to remember that one day your children will grow up and move on with their lives and you and your spouse will be alone again. Don't allow your relationship to fall apart before that happens.

One of the most effective ways to save a marriage is to focus more on yourself. Too often one partner will give more of themselves to the relationship than the other does. You both need to have interests that fall outside the marriage, whether it's a career, friends or a hobby. You need to remember that someone with their own life is much more interesting to another. Letting the marriage become your entire life is a recipe for disaster.
