Insomnia does not only lessen our precious time to rest, but it also lowers productivity at work and school, and causes overall fatigue.
Insomnia is not one of those conditions that we should take for granted as a normal part of life like catching a cold.
It is something that can be easily prevented, unless it is a symptom to a graver underlying health problem such as sleep apnea, or some psychological problem.
It is, therefore, advisable to consult with a physician if you're experiencing insomnia in case there is a more serious underlying health concern.
If there is no underlying health reason for insomnia, there are several home remedies we can utilize to help get rid of it.
Feeding the body with light snacks, drinking milk or herbal teas, avoiding caffeine, taking a warm bath, getting a massage, and doing exercise all help us fall asleep easier.
Improving our sleep environment also help cure insomnia.
Control the amount of light that gets into the bedroom.
The more light that passes through, the more our body feels the need to stay awake.
Adjust the thermostat so that it is neither too hot nor too cold when you go to sleep.
Keep the bed as comfortable as possible.
Think of your bed as your personal sanctuary; do whatever you like with it to make you feel more comfortable.
Also, avoid working inside your bedroom, more importantly, never work on your bed.
The bed should be a place for sleeping, and sleeping alone.
When you take your work to bed, it programs your mind to work even while you have fallen asleep.
The real secret, however, to curing insomnia lies within our minds.
It is important to get the mind relaxed before we sleep.
Do not watch TV, read books, or do anything that can stimulate your mind.
Instead listen to soft and soothing music, or set up a bed time so your mind knows when it is the right time to sleep.
You should not get worked up about not being able to sleep, either.
It will not help if you just lie there in bed and force yourself to sleep.
Instead, do some other non-stimulating activities and make use of the time wisely, and when you feel tired again, that's the only time you should get back in your bed.
Avoid using illuminated alarm clocks or looking at the clock every now and then.
This will only make you frustrated about not being able to sleep and once again keep the mind all worked up.
Try meditating to keep your mind at peace.
Once you are able to relax your mind and put your brain on sleep mode, the rest of your body will also be able to rest easily.
If you don't have problems necessarily falling asleep but staying asleep, you may be suffering from excessive snoring or sleep apnea.
