Growing your herbs from cuttings is a cost effective way to get your herbs.
Who doesn't want to save money when starting a home herb garden? Shrubby type of herbs such as rosemary, sage, lavender, bay and tarragon will grow from cuttings.
You need to do this in mid to late summer.
just pull off a young healthy shoot (without a flower on it) with a small piece of woody stem attached.
Take off the lower leaves and plant stem in moist, free draining potting mix in a container.
You can put 6-8 pieces in one pot.
Remember to keep it moist and in a shady spot and they should root within a month.
Re pot into individual pots until you are ready to transplant into the garden.
Tip Be sure to ask to take cuttings if the original plant is not yours.
Herbs From Division This is another wonderfully easy way to obtain more plants cheaply.
Clump forming herbs are best divided this way - these include chives, lemongrass, mint, and thyme.
This is best done in spring or early summer and gives the new plant time to get established before winter.
Dig up the entire plant root ball to divide.
With clumps like chives just gently pull apart but with herbs with fibrous roots you will need to cut into pieces with a growing shoot.
How many depends on the size of your plant to start with.
Replant into a new space in your garden or into individual pots to give away.
Herbs From Layering Another way to expand your garden cheaply with your favourite plants.
It is easy to do with herbs that have trailing stems such as oregano, thyme, mint, lavender.
This is best to do if your plants are growing in the garden outdoors.
Lay a long stem down along the soil and pin in down, you can use a bent piece of wire or even a large stone for this.
Where the stem touches the soil new roots will grow.
When you see this new plant growing cut the stem from the main plant and hey presto you have a new plant.
Dig up this new plant and transplant it to a new location/container.
As you see there are several ways to get your herb garden up and running and if you have a friend with an established garden it is even cheaper to start.
Happy Herb Gardening.
