    • 1). Pick any rugs and items off the hardwood floors. Move furniture with the aid of furniture gliders to prevent scratching the hardwood floor.

    • 2). Examine the vacuum cleaner carefully. Check to see if the vacuum cleaner has a hardwood floor setting. The vacuum may have a setting to adjust the height for carpet piles as well. Set the height to the tallest setting to prevent the brush from hitting the hardwood floor. The vacuum may have an option to turn the brushes off as well.

    • 3). Empty the contents or replace the vacuum bag if it appears full. Locate the filter and screens and ensure that nothing appears to block them.

    • 4). Place the hose attachment onto your vacuum. Remove large debris with the hose and use it to remove dirt and debris from hard to reach corners. Vacuum the perimeter of the room to remove the dust.

    • 5). Vacuum the hardwood floors in small sections. Move the vacuum slowly horizontally and vertically until you successfully remove the dirt and debris from the floor.
