Shift Work and Stress – 8 Easy Tips To Help You Get Rid of It!

101 5
We all know that shift work and stress go hand and hand with one another.  Just working shift work is stressful because quite frankly getting up in the dark is not normal for any human being.

But the combination of shift work and stress creates wear and tear on your body, and I don't know about you but I much prefer to wake up to the sound of birds chirping and sunlight streaming onto my face as opposed to a blaring alarm clock.  (I'm sure my alarm clock is getting louder and nastier by the day!)

Stress however, is in fact a normal part of life but if you have too much of it, your health will start to suffer.

When we get stressed we get tired, feel anxious, unhappy, tearful, tense and even angry.  Stress can cause many illnesses to appear including headaches and migraines, panic attacks and can even lead to depression.

The good news is that while we can't always control the causes of our stress, we can be responsible for how we deal with them.  Some tips which I have personally used to help overcome shift work and stress include:

1.    Breathe! – when we get stressed we forget to breathe properly and start to take fast, shallow breaths, which makes our heart beat faster and oxygen levels fall.  To combat this, take three long breaths and carry on.

2.    You are in control of your life – this may sound ridiculous, but reminding yourself of this can help you stay calm even in the most stressful situations.

3.    Just saying the word ‘calm' in your head over and over will actually help you to feel calm.

4.    Relaxation - fairly obvious but many of us make excuses that we just don't have time to relax.  If you value your health and those around you, you will make time

5.    Stop worrying!  Many people feel stressed because they worry so much.  (This was me – a constant ‘worry wart' about everything and everybody).  The reality is 90% of what we worry about never happens.

6.    Get more organisedOne of the main causes of stress is disorganisation.  Sort your life out and your stress levels will drop.

7.     Exercise more.  Exercise releases the body's natural painkillers – endorphins, which give you a wonderful high and alleviates pent-up frustration and anxiety.  Just 20 minutes three times a week will not only keep you fit, but stop you feeling tired and stressed out.

8.     Eat healthy.  If you overdose on sugar foods and junk food, you'll send your body's sugar levels rocketing.  And when you don't eat regularly, your sugar levels plummet, you become moody and your ability to cope with everyday pressure declines.  So eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables every single day and you'll notice a real difference in how you cope with shift work and stress.
