Reinstalling Windows XP Without Formatting

    • 1). Turn on the computer. Insert the Windows XP CD. Hold down "CTRL," "Alt" and "Del" twice, before booting to Windows XP, to restart the computer.

    • 2). Press any key to boot from the disc drive, when prompted. On the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press "Enter."

    • 3). Read the license agreement, then press "F8" to proceed. Use the directional pad on the keyboard to select your installation of Windows XP from the list of detected operating systems.

    • 4). Press "R" to begin reinstalling Windows XP without formatting the hard drive. Windows XP will copy the setup files to the hard drive. Do not press any key to boot from the CD, even if prompted.

    • 5). Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to finish setting up the reinstallation of Windows XP. Windows XP will behave as if it is installing the operating system for the first time, but after logging into XP, you should be able to access your old files and programs.
