Step Aside
Step Aside is the house in which the great Indian patriot Deshbandhu Chittranjan Das passed away on June the 16th, 1925. It is located on the way to Bhutia Busty via the C.R. Das Road. A few items of his personal use are preserved on the first floor. On the ground floor there is a maternity clinic named after him for the poor people. Visitors cannot access the inner sanctum of the house. From the Chowrasta, it is in a few minutes' walk.
Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre
Darjeeling is a home away from home for the thousands of Tibetan refugees who came to reside in India. "Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre" is a rehabilitation centre for the community that was established on October 1, 1959. The residents of the centre are known for their world famous handicrafts. They produce excellent carpets, woollen goods, woodwork, etc.
Ava Art Gallery
It is situated about 4 km from the chowrasta on the National Highway. The Gallery was established in 1965 by Bhopal Rao Sett and Ava Devi. The only Art Gallery of its kind in the hills has a collection of some 60 pieces of artwork in water, oil and thread paintings. There are no entrance fees.
Peace Pagoda
The Japanese Peace Pagoda Situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar Hill was established by Nipponzan Myohoji. This is the highest free structure of Darjeeling which showcases the four avatars of the Buddha. One can reach here by foot or by taxi.
Darjeeling-Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car
This popular ropeway is India's oldest passenger ropeway which connects Darjeeling with Singla Bazaar. Situated at the North Point, It is about 3 km north of the town. It has been extensively modernized to provide visitors a safe travel. Boarding on the ropeway, people can ride over the clouds and enjoy the aerial view of the lush green tea gardens below.
Observatory Hill & Mahakal Temple
This is the "Holy Hill" for the locals which has The Mahakal temple at its top. A few minutes' walk from the Chowrasta takes on to this hill. Situated on the highest ridge of the town, it is a revered place where the Hindu priest and the Buddhist monk share a common altar.
