How to Communicate Without Fighting

    • 1). Discuss problems when you've had time to calm down. If you feel angry and frustrated, postpone discussions until you've had time to re-group and control your emotions. Leave the house, go for a walk and make plans to address the issue at a later time.

    • 2). Learn how to listen. Constantly talking over someone or interrupting can cause the other person to become irritated, and this can trigger an argument or fight. Allow the other person to express themselves completely before speaking.

    • 3). Keep your voice low. Elevating your voice to make your point can cause the other person to respond in kind. Speak in your normal speaking voice to keep the conversation on a mature level.

    • 4). Stay away from name calling. Using inappropriate language and verbal abuse will trigger defensiveness from the other person, and this can lead to an argument or fight.

    • 5). Control your body language. Appearing uninterested in what the other person is saying can steer a discussion in the wrong direction. Maintain good eye contact, but avoid rolling your eyes, looking disinterested or smirking.
