Head cold, or common cold, is a result of a viral attack on the mucus membrane.
This normally occurs in winter season and causes lot of discomfort to the individual.
The symptoms include running nose, sneezing, congestion, head-aches and sometimes slight fever.
The mucus is generally clear and cough is triggered by the mucus entering the throat.
Generally, this condition cures on its own in about 10 days.
One can try some of the following natural remedies as well: • Hot fluids: Drink hot water or soups to sooth the membranes of the nose or throat, prevent dehydration and get relief from congestion.
• Steam: Inhale steam from a hot water bath or from a shower to relieve the inflammation of the nasal and/or throat membranes.
Few drops of oils like eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil can be used instead.
This will also remove the mucus out of the system.
Humidifiers are available for this purpose.
• Spicy foods: Food or soups which are spicy will aid in relieving cold.
However, these foods should not be consumed if you are suffering from throat irritation.
• Medicines: Antihistamine and decongestants along with Vitamin C substitutes are ideal for treating throat inflammation.
Certain home remedies like drinking herbal tea made of basil leaves or ginger will give relief.
One can also drink hot milk mixed with honey, turmeric and basil leaves.
• Gargle: Warm water mixed with salt or turmeric powder or medicated gargles if used 3 or 4 times a day can help to treat the symptoms of a head cold.
• Rest: Adequate rest while being fully covered will help the body fight against the infection.
