How to Make Paste Ups
- 1). Choose or create an image with or without text that conveys the intended message of the paste up. Original images can be altered and manipulated using art or photo editing software.
- 2). Lay out the blank sheet of newsprint over the original design on a flat surface and trace the design with a slightly dull or thick-tipped pencil. Sharp pencils tend to tear the thin paper.
- 3). Remove the original art and trace the pencil lines and shade or color the images and text to finalize the design. Clean any extraneous pencil lines with a soft rubber eraser and trim away extra paper with a pair of scissors if desired.
- 1). Pour one cup of water into a small saucepan over medium heat on the stove.
- 2). Dump the wheat flour into a small bowl and sprinkle in two or three tablespoons of cool tap water as you stir with the whisk.
- 3). Drizzle the small bowl of liquid flour into the saucepan of hot water as you stir with a whisk.
- 4). Increase the heat to medium high and bring the mixture to a full boil before turning off the heat. Continue stirring with the whisk as the paste cools and thickens to avoid lumps.
- 5). Stir the sugar into the paste once it has nearly cooled to room temperature and has thickened enough to cling to the whisk.
- 1). Get the owner's permission before affixing your paste up. Illegal pasting is prosecuted as vandalism just like graffiti and stenciling. Select a clean and dry surface.
- 2). Dip a paintbrush or foam brush into the paste and paint the surface where the paste up will be placed. Thicker coats of paste will hold the poster in place more securely. Wheat paste drips and gets everywhere, so a pair of rubber gloves is helpful to keep hands clean.
- 3). Press the paste up firmly into the wheat paste on the surface with the design facing out. Push out any air bubbles to make sure that the paper is making full contact with the paste.
- 4). Paint over the paste up with a thick layer of wheat paste to permeate the paper. The paste will make the design appear a bit cloudy at first, but in an hour or two it will dry clear.
