How to Make Bittorrent Faster
- 1). Optimize your maximum upload speed. Uploading at a higher rate will increase your download speed, too. In order to determine your maximum upload speed, cease all downloads and visit a site such as Speedtest that can calculate your speed (see Resources). Within your BitTorrent client, go to Preferences and set your maximum upload to speed to approximately 80% of your maximum upload speed as determined by Speedtest. For example, if Speedtest determined your maximum upload speed to be 100 kbs/second, set the speed in your client to 80 kbs/second.
- 2). Optimize your maximum download speed. Using the same Speedtest method, allocating 95% of your maximum download speed. For example, if Speedtest determined your maximum download speed to be 100 kbs/second, set your speed to 95 kbs/second.
- 3). Optimize your maximum number of peers. As a general rule, you should set your maximum number of peers equal to your maximum upload speed multiplied by 1.2 to 1.3. For example, if Speedtest determined your maximum upload speed to be 100 kbs/second, you would set your maximum peers to 120 to 130.
- 4). Optimize your maximum number of upload slots. The calculation for maximum upload slots is slightly more complicated than the others. Divide your maximum upload speed by six and then add one. For example, if your maximum upload speed was 60 kbs/second, you would divide 60 by 6 and add 1 to get 7 slots.
- 5). Check the number of seeds and peers on your BitTorrent download. You want to download files with a high ratio of seeds to peers and you generally want to download files with as many seeds as possible.
- 6). Increase the speed of your Internet connection. It may seem obvious, but getting a faster Internet connect will greatly improve BitTorrent performance. Anyone downloading files with a connection slower than a LAN or cable connection will notice the greatest gains after upgrading.
