Five Most Important Responsibilities of Citizens

    Stay Informed

    • Your national, local and international world changes from day to day as new information is gathered and distributed. It is your responsibility to stay informed and updated on these changes. Gather enough information about your nation as well as your local community to make educated decisions in your society. Use the resources at your disposal, such as the Internet and television, to learn about your changing world.

    Vote

    • Democracy is a participatory style of government that requires your input on the most important choice you have as a citizen, who will represent you in government. Know the voting schedule for your area and make accommodations to vote early if you know that you cannot make it to the booth on a voting day. Make an informed decision about who will represent you since their decisions could have a significant impact on your life and your entire community.

    Jury Duty

    • Each citizen may be called upon to serve on a jury at any time. This becomes your responsibility to stand in judgment of your peers and ensure that justice is served. Take your responsibility as a juror seriously and accept the responsibility with respect. Your fellow citizens rely upon an informed jury system for security.

    Obey the Laws

    • The legal system is in place to protect the populous and ensure responsible fairness throughout your community. Take the laws of your nation and your local community seriously and actively work to follow them. If you feel as though a law is unjust or irresponsible, appeal to your representative for changes to the law. If you witness a violation of these laws, be an example to your community by alerting the proper authorities regarding the legal violation.

    Pass It On

    • Pass along your respect for your responsibilities as a citizen to your children, assuring that your civic awareness survives into future generations. Teach your children about the necessity to vote and show them how to stay informed. Demonstrate your respect for jury duty by accepting your responsibility without complaint, and be an example to your children of how to obey the law. Your example shows them how important it is to be a citizen.
